Dennis and I did another one of our “Portland Adventures” yesterday. The highlight of the day was the Old Salt meat market and restaurant (owned by the same people the own Grain and Gristle) on NE 42cnd. We went into the bar area. Dennis had a beer and I had a cider (Reverend Nat’s Revelation Jonathan).
The bar area was well organized and clean and the small restaurant was pretty full. We watched the food plates going out and they looked pretty tasty (smelled wonderful) and seemed like reasonable portions (not too big but not too small). You could see the meat market counter from the bar side of the room.
After finishing our beverages we decided to purchase some of the hand made meat offerings. Their specialty bacon, Ben’s bacon, is made from the belly of the pork and has a bit of a maple flavor to it. It is quite spendy so we’ll be having it only at the restaurant from now on. We also purchased a package of beef jerky. It’s a salt version of the traditional stuff, but tender and flavorful. We loved it. As well as these items, we bought their braunschweiger (a smoked liverwurst), a Russian sausage, Drago, and South African sausage, Boerewors.
The braunschweiger is the best I’ve ever tasted! The sausages are juicy and flavorful – great for breakfast or dinner!
I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the NE side of Portland – Worth the time!
