DIY Fun Patriotic Center Pieces

Need a center piece for the 4th of July?  These two are super simple and cost just pennies!  Want to know more?

Here is what you need:

A bag of white rice

Red and Blue Food coloring                                            20140701_184643

Clear vases

Flags or foil sprays (I got mine at the dollar store)

A wide mouthed funnel

Fill a glass bowl with just enough rice for your project (this is not something you will save for next year, so don’t make too much).

Add some blue food coloring (I used about half of one of those little bottles).

20140701_185205Mix it into the rice using the back of a large spoon, adding more as needed.

Keep stirring it until the  color is well blended.  Repeat the process using the red food coloring –

After the color is blended, cover a cookie sheet with foil and pour the rice onto it.

Spread it out evenly and place both cookie sheets in a warm, dry place to dry.

I put mine in the oven (it was off) over night.    (if you want to get really fancy you can add glitter!)

After the rice is dry, get out a wide mouthed funnel, your vases and the rice.  Roll the foil around the rice to create a spout to pour into containers that have a spout for pouring.   IMG_7460Fill three containers with each of the three colors.  The white is simply the undyed rice.

IMG_7461Pour the rice into the vase using the funnel.  Make sure you pour slowely so it doesn’t clog.  If it does, gently tap it to release the rice.  First pour one color, then the next and then the last.

This one is a fish bowl with several layers.  I pushed the foil spray down into the center.  That’s it –

You now have TWO centerpieces for your holiday table.

How festive! We dye rice for sensory play pretty often – I can’t believe I never thought to use it for decor!

  3. Hi Helen, these are really neat, I have seen the colored rice but not known how to do this, glad you came and shared and hope you have a great weekend!!!
