Strawberry season is starting to wind down, but I noticed raspberries last time I stopped in the berry farm! And they said blueberries were just about ready. As those of us that live in Oregon know, the blackberries are soon to follow!
So where can you go to pick your own or buy some fresh berries someone else picked? Some of the grocery stores carry locally grown fruit, but I’m never really sure how long ago it was picked. My choice is farmers market or direct from the farm.
Here is a list of four farms that I am familiar with in the upper Willamette Valley – followed by a few recipes for Strawberries and Raspberries. Watch for the blackberry post!
Boones Ferry Berry Barn – this is the place I go to most often. They have great berries and they’re on my way home from work!
I’ve stopped a few times at Smith Berry Barn when I’m in the area. Their produce is great quality.
I have never personally been to Sauvie Island Farms, but I have friends that won’t miss it! They go frequently throughout the season to get some wonderfully sweet berries.
South Barlow Berries in Canby has a great variety of berries for U-pick.
Looking for something in our area? Just google U-pick berries or visit Pick your Own.org –
So head on out to the farms this weekend. Cook up some great berry recipes or top some ice cream with a few – and eat a big bowl of these delights all by themselves!
